AI for Faculty

This guide will help faculty understand and integrate AI into their courses.

Adapting Assignments

Adapting assignments can be tricky. This process (developed with the help of Microsoft CoPilot) can help guide you through updating an assignment. For each step there is one featured resource that we think you'll find most helpful. Please reach out to the Drake Memorial Library AI Team or the CELT Instructional Design Team

Step 1: Identify the Assignment Goals

Featured Resource: Bloom's Taxonomy Revised (Oregon eCampus)

  1. Clarify Learning Objectives: Review the original assignment to ensure that the core learning objectives are still relevant. Identify what skills or knowledge you want students to demonstrate.
  2. Consider AI Capabilities: Think about how generative AI can enhance the learning experience. This could include brainstorming ideas, generating text, or providing feedback.

Step 2: Redesign the Assignment Structure

Featured Resource: The MAGE (Mapping, AI Vulnerability, Grading, Evaluation) Framework

  1. Incorporate AI as a Tool, not a Crutch: Revise the assignment to encourage students to use AI for specific tasks. For example, they might use an AI tool to generate a first draft, which they will then revise and refine based on feedback.
  2. Encourage Critical Thinking: Design prompts that require students to critique or build upon AI-generated content. This could involve evaluating the accuracy of the information or offering alternative perspectives.

Step 3: Integrate AI Tools

Featured Resource: Using AI (SUNY Brockport)

  1. Select Appropriate AI Tools: Choose generative AI tools that align with your assignment goals. Examples include chatbots for discussion, text generation tools for drafting essays, or image creation software for visual projects.
  2. Provide Access and Explicitly Teach AI Tools: Ensure that students have access to the necessary tools and provide clear guidelines on how to use them effectively.

Step 4: Establish Ethical Guidelines

Featured Resource: Ethics & Evaluation (SUNY Brockport)

  1. Promote Academic Integrity: Clearly communicate expectations regarding the use of AI tools. Emphasize the importance of originality and proper citation of AI-generated content.
  2. Discuss Ethical Considerations: Engage students in discussions about the ethical implications of using AI, such as bias in algorithms and the importance of responsible AI usage.

Step 5: Create Assessment Criteria

Featured Resource: Assessment Strategies Teaching @JHU (Johns Hopkins)

  1. Revise Rubrics: Update your grading rubrics to reflect the use of AI. Consider criteria such as creativity, critical engagement with AI-generated content, and the quality of revisions made by the student.
  2. Include Self-Reflection: Encourage or require students to submit a self-reflection on their process, discussing how they utilized AI in their work and what they learned from the experience.

Step 6: Pilot and Gather Feedback

Featured Resource: Drake Memorial Library AI Team

  1. Test the Revised Assignment: Before rolling it out to the entire class, consider piloting the revised assignment with a small group of students.
  2. Collect Feedback: After the assignment is completed, gather feedback from students about their experiences with AI integration. Use this feedback to make further improvements.

Step 7: Share Best Practices

Featured Resource: AI News & Scholarship, Presentations (SUNY Brockport)

  1. Collaborate with Colleagues: Share your experiences and insights with fellow faculty members. Collaborating can lead to innovative approaches and shared resources.
  2. Stay Updated: Keep abreast of new developments in AI technology and pedagogy. Regularly revisit and revise assignments as needed to ensure they remain relevant and effective.
