Where to Start
So, you need statistics for your research. There are lots of place to look for stats, and this guide will help you.
Bear in mind though that statistics can take some digging to find, and that what you want numbers for hasn't necessarily been counted yet. One further point - almanacs, handbooks, encyclopedias, websites like that of the census etc., all can be helpful, but keep in mind that a good book or article on your topic may well be an excellent source of numbers - maybe they did the digging for you!

General International Stats
- Monthly Bulletin of StatisticsUN website covering a wide range of international stats on population, economy etc.
- International StatisticsGeneral stats on other countries comparing to the US (from the census bureau.)
General US Stats
- CQ Researcherreports on topics from abortion to gun control & more, each report gives helpful stats.
- Statistical Abstract of the United Statesmassive compilation of statistics on a wide range of topics - online back to 1878.
- NationMasterEven though it's a commercial site, NationMaster gets stats from reliable sources like the UN, CIA World Factbook, etc. Searchable as well as categories. Really handy for general statistics.
- StateMasterLike NationMaster only for the 50 states. Info from federal government sources.
- Governing Sourcebook: State & Localauthoritative compendium of data on the states and the largest U.S. municipalities; contains essential data in 10 categories.
