Keywords or Search Terms

Searching in databases is a little bit different than searching in Google.  You need to have keywords or search terms that are relevant to your research statement. It is important to remember to look for synonyms as well, as sometimes the words in the database are different than what we use in every day language.

Watch the video below to learn more about generating keywords. Use the worksheets on the left to start creating your own list, or pull out a piece of paper or blank screen on your phone.

Example of keywords for a search

Search example

Here is an example of a search we have used in one of your classes:

Research Questions:  What are some of the barriers to physical activity for children with visual impairments?

Search Keywords:

(barriers OR limitations) AND ("physical activity" OR movement OR activity) AND "visual impairments" AND (children or child or student)
