Open Educational Resources (OER)

This guide explores Open Educational Resources (OER), covering how to find, evaluate, create, license, promote, and conduct research about them.

Evaluating OER

Evaluating OER

Evaluating Open Educational Resources (OER) is similar to reviewing any other materials. Start by checking if the material covers your subjects accurately and is free from major errors. Ensure it is clearly written and suitable for your audience. Accessibility is also important, so look for alternative text for images and captions on videos.

Consider the following for OER:

Content Quality
  • Comprehensiveness: Does it cover all necessary topics?
  • Accuracy: Is it error-free and unbiased?
  • Relevance: Is it up-to-date and easy to update?
  • Clarity: Is it clearly written and easy to understand?
  • Consistency: Is the terminology consistent?
  • Organization: Is it logically organized?
  • Grammar: Are there any grammatical errors?
  • Cultural Relevance: Is it inclusive and free from bias?
Format and Usability
  • Modularity: Can it be easily divided into sections?
  • Interface: Is it easy to navigate and free from display issues?
  • Accessibility: Are captions and alternative text provided?
Additional Considerations
  • Clarity and Readability: Is the content clear and well-organized?
  • Accuracy: Is it factually correct and free from errors?
  • Adaptability: Can you modify and rearrange the content?
  • Appropriateness: Is it suitable for higher education?
  • Supplementary Resources: Are there additional materials like quizzes or study guides?

OER Evaluation Checklist. 1. Does it cover the content you need? 2. Is it accessible and easy to understand? 3. Can you legally adapt and use it? 4. How does it fit with your course structure? 5. Are there supplementary materials to support learning? Finally, remember that OER can often be adapted to better fit your needs, so be flexible in your evaluation and use guides on adapting and creating OER as needed.
