Koran By Heart Thursday, October 17th, 7pm
Each year during Ramadan, more than a hundred of the best young students from more than 70 countries across the Islamic world converge on Cairo for Egypt’s International Holy Koran Competition, one of the Islamic world’s most prestigious contests. Some of the competitors are as young as seven, and several have memorized the entire 600-page Koran without actually speaking Arabic. KORAN BY HEART follows two boys and one girl as they go head-to-head with other children.
Prince Among Slaves Thursday, November 7th, 7pm
Prince Among Slaves recounts the true story of an African Muslim prince who was captured and sold into slavery in the American South. After 40 years of enslavement, he finally regained his freedom, became a national celebrity, and dined in the White House. This is an incredible story about a remarkable man who endured the humiliation of slavery without ever losing his dignity or his hope for freedom.
In celebration of the books and DVDs we received from Bridging Cultures Bookshelf: Muslim Journeys, Drake Memorial Library is offering a variety of fun and thought provoking events. Drake Memorial Library has partnered with the Seymour Public Library. The Seymour library will be hosting three of the scheduled events.

The opening night poetry reading is co-sponsored by SUNY Brockport English Club. The members of the English Club will present a selection of Islamic poems from classical literature to modern expresssions of faith . Light refreshments will be offered following the readings.
Tuesday, October 22, 7pm Seymour Public Library, Duryea Room
Pam O’Sullivan, Head of Integrated Public Services at Drake Library, has 29 years of professional storytelling experience. Using tales from the Arabian Nights she will conduct an interactive class demonstrating the skills used in successful storytelling.

Learning and Living the Sufi Religion
SUNY Brockport history professor, Carl Davila, will present a lecture discussing his personal journey as a student of a Sufi Mystic.
Wednesday, November 20th, 6-9pm Seymour Public Library, Duryea Room
This hand-on introduction to Islamic art will include origami, calligraphy and geometric pattern building. Activities are for all ages. A variety of short documentaries will be shown featuring Islamic art in many forms from textiles to gardening.
Thursday, November 21, 6-8:30pm, Seymour Public Library, Duryea Room
Display of artwork created during the Islamic Art Craft program. Light refreshments will be served.
