Please join us as we offer a series of events that will celebrate, explore and appreciate Latino American culture.

Friday, February 12, 2016 Latino American Festival 2pm - 5pm Union Lounge

Valentine's Day weekend we will kick off the Latino American event series with a festival celebrating the diverse culture.  The festival will feature trivia, games, music, dancing and, of course, food!

March 4, 2016 The Unique Language of the Latino American Immigrant 3pm Drake Libray Room #215

Dr. Ewelina Barski-Moskal, Spanish professor at SUNY Brockport, will lecture on the unique qualities of the Spanish language spoken by the Latino American immigrant.  The method that the Spanish language is spoken in varies from the monolingual norm that is found in Spanish speaking countries and from what is taught in the classroom. Event includes screening of the PBS series Latino Americans episode #3 War and Peace

April 22, 2016 Puerto Rico and the Depression 12pm Drake Library Room #215

Dr. Anne Macpherson, history professor at SUNY Brockport, is currently researching gender, labor, and politics in Puerto Rico in the short but pivotal period of 1938-40. Dr. Macpherson will take a break from working on her book to discuss Puerto Rico during the Great Depression and how it is related to the current debt crisis.

March 25 2016 The Many Cultures that are Latino Americans 3pm Drake Library Room #215

Andrea Parada, Professor of Spanish and Chair of the Modern Language department at SUNY Brockport, will address the many different ethnicities that create the Latino American culture.  The event will include a screening of the PBS series Latino Americans:  500 Years that Shaped History.  Episode #4 The New Latinos addresses the post WWII large-scale immigration from Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic.

Betty Garcia Mathewson, Project Director for Opening Doors Diversity Project, will introduce a series of DVDs and resources guides, Authentic VoicesAuthentic Voices is an approach to providing multilingual services for the education, medical and workplace settings.  Authentic Voices offers plans and strategies for participating in bilingual meetings and communicating through an interpreter.

February 26, 2016 Real Women Have Curves 3pm Drake Library Room #215

Dr. Carter Soles, film professor at SUNY Brockport, will introduce and lead a post discussion screening of the movie Real Women Have Curves.
