Relevant Article Databases

These DATABASES are most relevant for research in Archaeology.  To access a complete list of article databases, go to the library articles and databases page.

  • JSTOR
Full-text database of articles dating back to the middle 1800's. Does not have current articles, but is excellent for archaeological topics. See Relevant Journal titles for a search screen example.
  • ScienceDirect
Has the full-text for two major archaeology journals:
    Journal of Anthropological Archaeology
    Journal of Archaeological Science
  • Academic Search Complete
Multi-disciplinary full text database which covers areas related to archaeology as well as anthropology.
You can search this one and Humanities Source (below) together.
  • Humanities Source
  • Academic OneFile
Similar to Academic Search Complete, but includes the full-text to some archaeology journals that are not available elsewhere.
It comes from a different company than many of the "Ebsco" databases you might be used to.

Advanced Search Reminders

  • To look for a phrase use “quotation marks” around your terms:
    • “mesa verde” will find those words next to each other, instead of anywhere on the page.
  • To look for variations of a word, or to look for the singular and plural, use the :
    • archaeology will find archaeology, archaeological, etc.

History Databases

These two databases might work if you need the history of a civilization or more in-depth coverage of a culture.

  • America: History & Life
Indexes articles for U.S. and Canadian history.
Links to full-text articles IF available from the Drake library, otherwise use Interlibrary Loan.
  • Historical Abstracts
Indexes articles and books on history, excluding the U.S. and Canada.
Links to full-text articles IF available; otherwise use interlibrary loan.
